Stillness in Seconds: The Tiny, Simple Habit
Tips for weaving small moments of mindfulness into your day that help calm your mind and bring balance
A few days ago, I wrote about the importance of creating stillness in our daily lives. Some of you agreed that you too need and want stillness, then quickly added, “But I’m always restless,” or “It’s so hard to find the time.”
It doesn’t have to be hard.
Stillness isn’t some lofty practice reserved for candlelit meditation rooms (unless you want it to be). It can be as simple as claiming a few quiet seconds for yourself—tiny pauses stitched into your day that quietly shift your mental landscape.
At my barre class today, as we were winding down stretched on the floor, I decided this was my moment. I let my gaze soften on the ceiling, allowed my mind to wander and my breath to grow steady. Breathe in, breathe out. Just briefly, but these few seconds grounded me.
A few seconds here, a few seconds there. These are mini mental breaks that help reset our brain to a calmer frequency, and they are easy to weave into your routine.
Pause to take three slow breaths before your next meeting. Put your phone away and let your mind drift for a minute at your desk. Make your coffee break an actual break.
Over time, these micro moments of stillness become a habit. A small, simple habit that carves out moments in our day that create pockets of peace, fuel creativity, and remind us whenever we want, we can always turn to this mental place to break up our day’s seemingly endless hustle.
